Leicester College is offering NVQs in hand bookbinding at level 3. Duration is 1 year, although it would need completing in 11 Months for admin to be carried out. Cost to the candidate is £300 unless they do not have a level 2 qualification in which case it is free. Candidates need to be working for a company or self employed. If self employed they need to be registered with the Inland Revenue and have employers liability or public liability insurance which costs about £50 for a year. Candidates receive 2 full days training, free of charge, at Leicester College covering whatever subjects are required. (Normal bespoke training at the college costs £300 per day). Four assessments need to be carried out, 2 in the workplace and 2 that could be carried out on the training days. The content of this NVQ covers the content in all 3 certificates of competence being run by the Society of Bookbinders. The work completed could be used for both the NVQ and certificates.

“Four members of the Charnwood Books team have successfully completed their NVQ in Hand Bookbinding at Leicester College. The training and support from the college was excellent. As the qualification is nationally recognised as the equivalent of two ‘A’ Levels or a BTEC Ordinary National Diploma it is considered well worth having.” Dawn Thornton, Charnwood Books
